Project Description
Wheaton Regional Park
This project renovates the 36,000 square foot lightweight steel frame tennis structure located in Wheaton Regional Park. The renovation includes a new fabric covering with insulating lining and upgrades the HVAC and lighting systems. In addition the project replaces and expands support facilities in a new ancillary building, including improved access to all six courts, enlarged lobby and pro shop, expanded locker rooms, possible weight room and storage.
Background
A facility planning study was conducted along with a revenue and expenditure analysis, and a plan for the ancillary building was approved by the Montgomery County Planning Board on October 4, 2007. Plans include reconfiguration of walkways, a large waiting/sitting space with a view of the courts from the first floor and second floor mezzanine levels, two staff offices, a cashiers office, a pro shop, restrooms with showers and lockers, a kitchenette, and a large storage space. Court access will be provided from the first floor lobby/sitting area. The project was approved and funded for detailed design and construction by the Montgomery County Council.
Status/Project Update
The main fabric covered structure was renovated in 2008 and opened to the public in February 2009. The ancillary building was funded for design to begin in FY10 and construction was proposed for FY12-13. However, due to budget cuts this renovation is delayed until re-allocation of funding.
