Project Description
Brookside Gardens
This project renovates the entrance to Brookside Gardens, located at 1800 Glenallan Avenue, emphasizes the entrance as the primary entrance for visitors, and creates a welcoming arrival atmosphere that sets the tone for a beautiful and unique garden experience.
Background
The 2005 Brookside Gardens Master Plan identified this project as the first of fifteen phases to implement the long range vision for the renewal of Brookside Gardens. A facility planning study was conducted and a plan for the entrance was approved by the Montgomery County Planning Board on July 17 2008. The renovated entrance will include improved vehicular and pedestrian access and circulation, display gardens and new plantings, artwork incorporated into the signage, decorative pavement, a gatehouse, an artistic gazebo and deck overlook along the pedestrian access route, low stone walls, deer control measures and limited stream bank restoration. The plan incorporates green design features including reduction of paved surfaces, a green roof on the gatehouse, permeable paving, recycled materials for pedestrian decking and boardwalks, and rain gardens.
Status/Project Update
This project is scheduled for construction in the FY11-16 Capital Improvements Program. Some funding for the project has been raised through donations, but public funding is needed to complete the project.
