Description
Rock Creek Regional Park
This project provides a new pedestrian bridge that will be a grade separated safe crossing for the Rock Creek Hiker-Biker Trail over Veirs Mill Road and removes the need for an existing on-road segment of the trail. This project also provides the local residents of the Aspen Hill community a safe crossing of heavily travelled Veirs Mill Road to access bus transit or other destinations.
Background
The popular Rock Creek Hiker-Biker Trail extends 15 miles from Beach Drive at the District of Columbia line to Lake Needwood in Rock Creek Regional Park. The trail currently crosses Veirs Mill Road at grade at a signalized at Aspen Hill Road. To the north of Veirs Mill Road, the trail is on-road for approximately 0.2 miles traversing Aspen Hill Road, Adrian Street, Baltic Avenue, and finally the access drive to Aspen Hill Local Park before continuing northward as a trail. Pedestrian improvements at this intersection were recommended in the 1998 Countywide Park Trails Plan and were recommended by the Montgomery County Council in 2001.
A facility planning study was conducted and a plan for this project was approved by the Montgomery County Planning Board on September 11, 2003. For this project, the Commission obtained Federal Transportation Enhancement funds and a Maryland Program Open Space grant, in the total amount of $5.327M. The project was approved and funded for detailed design and construction by the Montgomery County Council. Detailed design was completed and the project was advertised for construction in April 2008.
Status/Project Update
Construction of the project is complete. The bridge and approach trail are open for use by the public.
